Medication Policy
I will rely on the parents to keep me informed about any medical condition or treatment that the child is receiving. Parents/carers must sign a medication sheet daily giving details of the medicine, dosage and times to be administered. If a child has a long term illness then a long term medication form will be signed by the parents/carers. I will take the greatest care to ensure that these are administered according to the instructions. Signed records of all medication administered will be recorded in the medicine file. The medication file will contain:
- A record of all medication on site and their location
- Parental consent forms
- Record of administration of medication to individual children
Dates of all medication will be checked – if it is found to be out of date, the parents will be informed but no medication given. If a child refuses to take their medication I will not compel them to do so. I will record the refusal and any surrounding circumstances and I will inform the parents as soon as possible. I will only accept medication that has been prescribed by a doctor, dentist or nurse.
- Medication not in its original packaging cannot be administrated.
- No medication can be administrated without prior written consent from the child’s parents.
Medication will be stored in the kitchen in a locked cupboard or in the fridge if they need refrigerated. Medication that is needed in an emergency will not be locked away. i.e. inhalers. No medication is to be left in children’s bags.
